We only use Valrhona chocolate in our products, but why and what makes it so special? Not only is the quality of the beans impeccable and the timely process taken to take the bean to chocolate as we know it, but the work which Valrhona are doing through their ethical and social policy, Live Long Valrhona, in and amongst the communities which grow our beloved cocoa bean and their vision on social responsibility. This is what we think makes it special.
Live Long focuses on ethics, sustainability, innovation and quality, all key elements to a successful and long relationship with the small communities around the world. Currently Valrhona have strong partnerships with 11 countries, based specifically in key cocoa growing regions between the tropics and Cancer and Capricorn.
The importance of the Live Long is highlighted in the work done to support the communities who grow the cocoa. Over the last 5 years, 20 projects have been completed such as a clean water project in Peru and planting Gran Blanco planation which previously was a nearly extinct cocoa variety as well as co-funding a technical advisor for the plantation. Live Long has worked to renovate a village in Madagasca called Andzavibe, building 45 homes and a health care centre as well as rebuilding various other communities and planations around the world which have suffered from storms and earthquakes.
On a visit to one a community centre in Wassa Nkran, Ghana, Cedric a Valrhona sourcer encountered crowds waving signs with messages of thanks, such as "We are all Valrhonas" and "Live Long Valrhona", from here it became apparent that their social responsibility projects should be called Live Long. Live Long's key areas of focus are symbolised by a commitment to the future, the communities who grow cocoa, sustainability and responsibility to the suppliers, customers, employees and the planet.
With Live Long, Valrhona aim to reduce their environmental impact by 50% on 2013 by 2025, by 2015 this was already down by 30%, as well as reduced energy consumption, water use, and reduce waste into landfill and redevelop packaging to have a lower impact.
At The Chocolate Society we recognise the importance of using conscious cocoa and understanding where the cocoa we use has come from. It means we can be confident that the product we are using is the best we can, and in hand, the products we supply are the best they can be.
